It's possible to save them in RTF (override SaveRTF, and probably

FillRTFColorTable, if your item has some colors that should be added in RTF

color table).

But reading custom items from RTF is not implemented (in general, it some

cases it can be done).

Which kind of custom item you created?

Saving/loading of custom items in RTF is optional. But you need to implement

saving and loading in RVF (RichView Format), because this is a default

Clipbard format for the components.
