How to insert a subparagraph?

Newbie question:

Suppose I have a paragraph of text that has a custom paragraph style (for

simplicity: it has a border; but it's not a table). I want to insert another

paragraph with a totally different style in the middle of the 1st paragraph

(at the cursor position), without breaking its border - the border should

still encompass the whole thing. How do I do that programmatically?
