Found the problem, sorry.

I had the following line:

  TPicture.RegisterFileFormat('gif','Gif Image',TGifImage);

in the initialization section, and also in the form.create. So it was called

twice.

As it seems, without this statement at all (nowhere in the code), it works

correctly
